Add guided tours

Beta:

Creating guided tours is a beta feature in ArcGIS StoryMaps. For more information about beta features, see FAQ.

The guided tour block combines a map with media and descriptive text to present a set of related places to your readers. Guided tour blocks fill the display and create an immersive experience in your stories. There are two guided tour layouts: Map focused and Media focused. The two layouts highlight different aspects of the content by giving more space to either the map or the media. Each location in a guided tour has a media panel, which can include multiple images or videos, and narrative text.

Note:

In the ArcGIS Enterprise environment, this feature uses basemaps from Living Atlas. If access to Living Atlas content has been disabled in your ArcGIS Enterprise environment, then this feature will be disabled in the story builder and the basemaps in any existing stories with this feature will not display. For more information, see Configure Living Atlas content.

Add a guided tour to your story

Use the following steps to build a guided tour:

  1. Click the open button Open block palette to open the block palette.
  2. Select Guided tour (beta).
  3. Choose a guided tour layout: Map focused or Media focused.

A guided story with one slide is added to the story.

    Note:

You can change the layout at any time in the authoring process by selecting Change layout from the Options menu in the slide panel.

  4. Add location, media, and narrative text to the slide.
    1. Click the Add location button to add a location. In Tour point location, you can search for a location or click the map to add a tour point. When you've selected the location, click the Place map button to return to the guided tour builder.
    2. Click the Add image or video button in the media panel to add up to five images or videos. For more information, see What media file types and sizes are supported in ArcGIS StoryMaps. After adding two or more media items, you can use the Reorder media button to rearrange the items.
    3. Add text to the narrative panel. Optionally, format the text by selecting it and using the formatting toolbar.
  5. Click the new slide button New slide in the slide panel to add a slide.

A new slide is added to the guided tour after the currently selected slide.

  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to add more tour locations.

When the guided tour is complete, continue authoring the rest of the story by scrolling past the end of the tour. The guided tour immersive block undocks and scrolls away.

Guided tour building tips

The following tips may help you build a guided tour:

  • In the Media focused layout, click the Switch panel placement button to switch the media and narrative panels.
  • In Map settings, you can change the basemap and map symbol color. You can also enable the current location button, which allows a reader using a mobile device to show their location on the map.
  • Guided tours are optimized for tablets and phones. On smaller screens, slides are stacked with the map at the top of the display and the media and narrative panels below.
  • When building a guided tour, a slide panel is displayed across the bottom of the page. You can use the slide panel to do the following:
    • Add and delete slides.
    • Duplicate slides.
    • Hide slides.
    • Browse and navigate between slides.
    • Reorder slides.
    • Change the transition style between slides.

Remove a guided tour from your story

Use the following steps to delete a guided tour and all of its slides:

  1. Click the delete button in the guided tour slide panel.
  2. Select Delete guided tour.

The guided tour is removed from the story.
