Service Description: The two datasets described below are both included in this GIS Service of Surficial Geology of Minnesota. The Quaternary Geology of Minnesota by the MGS (1982) is shown at smaller scales in this map service since it is a more general interpretation of the surficial geology. The scale of that dataset is 1:500,000. The other dataset is the Geomorphology of Minnesota produced in 1997 by the DNR and University of Minnesota Duluth. It is shown at larger scales given it is a more detailed interpretation of the surficial geology in Minnesota. The scale that that dataset is 1:100,000. Quaternary Geology: 1982 MGS State Map Series Data: This contains the geologic classification of the Quaternary deposits, glacial or fluvial in origin, that overlay the bedrock in most areas of the state. Statewide cover of surficial geology, mapped as: Hobbs, H.C., and Goebel, J.E., geologic Map of Minnesota: Quaternary Geology, scale 1:500000, Minnesota Geological Survey, 1982, State Map Series 1. Minnesota Geomorphology (1997): 1:100,000 scale geomorphology data describing a wide variety of conditions related to surficial geology within a hierarchical classification scheme. Data was published by the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota Geological Survey, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in 1997. To serve as an essential information source in the development of level 4 Ecological Classification System (ECS) delineations (Land Type Associations). Data were derived from a wide variety of image and hardcopy data sources of varying vintages
